Swisse founder Kevin Ring visits Switzerland, gaining insights into the benefits of Swiss natural medicines.
On his return to Australia, Kevin began formulating and manufacturing his own herbal and vitamin supplements in a health food shop in St Kilda – the beginnings of Swisse.
Kevin Ring moved Swisse to a new office in Niddrie, Melbourne as the business began to grow.
The hugely successful Swisse Ultivite multivitamin was developed.
Swisse branched out with products designed to support athletic performance. By the end of the ’80s, the Swisse range included over 200 products. As the company expanded further, Swisse moved to a warehouse in Airport West, Melbourne.
Professor Avni Sali led the development of scientifically validated natural medicines in partnership with Australian universities, and the first gender-specific Swisse’s Women’s Ultivite was formulated. The Men’s Ultivite soon followed. Swisse’s distribution was widened to include pharmacies. Swisse finished the decade as the Australian market leader in multivitamins.
Swisse began advertising in mainstream media around Australia, and launched the clinical range and the Ultiboost range. Swisse moved to their current location in Gipps Street, Collingwood.
In 2005, Radek Sali joined Swisse, and became the company’s first CEO in 2008.
This decade was notable as a period of extensive growth for Swisse, leading to Swisse taking its place as one of Australia’s leading brands within the wellness market.
The Swisse Skincare range was launched in Australia in 2012, along with a Sports Nutrition range – supporting performance and recovery for sports use.
In 2014, Swisse signed a global licencing partnership with PGT Healthcare LLP, the international joint venture between The Procter & Gamble Company and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. This collaboration enabled the rapid expansion of the Swisse brand of premium quality vitamins, minerals and supplements products into Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Sep 2016: Swisse Wellness and Biostime International, one of the leading premium infant nutrition producers in Asia, announced that a partnership with Biostime secured an 83% interest in Swisse.
Dec 2016: Swisse Wellness announced the company’s CEO, Radek Sali, and Managing Director Adem Karafili’s resignation. It was also announced that Oliver Horn had been appointed as Managing Director beginning this role in January 2017. Biostime Group CEO and Chairman, Mr Luo Fei, also announced Biostime International purchased the remaining 17 per cent of Swisse Wellness from its minority shareholders.
