You may have noticed, but here at Swisse, we’re a bit obsessed with blood oranges. They’re a delicious fruit that naturally contain antioxidant properties such as vitamin C and anthocyanins. Antioxidants such as these are great because they can help protect against potential free radical damage. So, what’s not to love about naval oranges’ ruby red cousin?
Blood oranges differ from their orange-colored relatives in both taste and look, as they have a hint of raspberry flavor and a deep red flesh. The red color of blood orange is due to the high levels of anthocyanins they contain. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, and can be consumed as part of your daily intake.
Whilst eating blood orange alone is delicious, there are plenty of other ways to get your vitamin C fix using this fruit. Our top tips include adding blood oranges to the following:
- Salads. Adding blood orange to salad greens along with a crumble of fetta or goat’s cheese is not only delicious, but the vitamin C in the blood orange may aid the absorption of iron from the leafy greens.
- Toast. Slice up the blood orange and add it on top of ricotta cheese on sourdough, rye or fruit toast with a drizzle of honey. A great snack instead of sweet biscuits for morning or afternoon tea.
- Compote. Blood orange compote makes a great topping for breakfasts. Try it on top of your cereal or yoghurt.
