General description: 

Ginkgo is one of the world’s oldest living species of tree, it’s existence can be traced back 200 million years! Originally popular in China it is now widely used worldwide with sales of the herb said to be growing at a rate of up to 25% per year.


Functions and general science:

Bilobalide and the ginkgolides are thought to be the main bioactive components that are unique to ginkgo. They have antioxidant properties and have been shown to have a protective action on mitochondria (the energy production centre of cells) as well as on neurons (nerve cells).

Ginkgo appears to have the ability to enhance blood flow, including the circulation and flow of blood to differing areas of the brain. 

In older adults experiencing memory decline associated with aging ginkgo has been shown to aid in memory formation.
